Daisuke Watanabe (渡辺 大祐, Watanabe Daisuke) is a Japanese video game writer. He works for a company called Square Enix. He is well-known for writing stories for popular games. These include the Final Fantasy series and the Kingdom Hearts series. Both are role-playing games.
Daisuke Watanabe's Journey in Gaming
Daisuke Watanabe became interested in writing in 1988. He was in junior high school at the time. He read a book based on the game Wizardry that inspired him. Before he joined Square, he wrote stories for manga (Japanese comics). These were called novelizations, meaning he turned existing stories into books.
Writing for Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts
His first Final Fantasy game as a story writer was Final Fantasy X. He helped plan the story for it. He even wrote many of the conversations (called dialog) for a part of the game called the Zanarkand Ruins. He wrote these lines almost overnight!
Daisuke Watanabe also worked on Final Fantasy XII. He later rejoined the team for Final Fantasy XIII. He helped shape the story and made sure all the parts connected well. He also wrote the script. This is like the lines actors say in a movie, but for game characters. He made sure each character's personality fit the story. He said working on the Final Fantasy XIII series was a lot of hard work. Besides game scripts, he wrote a three-part story. It was called Final Fantasy XIII Reminiscence: tracer of memories. It was published in a Japanese game magazine called Famitsu.
