Early life and health
Dana Lynne Goetz was born on May 6, 1964, in Los Angeles, California. Her dad, Theodore Goetz, directed commercials, and her mom was Sandy Hill.
When she was young, Dana was a talented athlete. She even placed high in national running races. But at age 10, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This health issue meant she could no longer continue her athletic career.
Diabetes also affected her physical growth. Because of this, Dana often looked younger than her age. This helped her play many child roles, even when she was a teenager or young adult.
Starting her acting career
Dana's first acting job was a commercial for the YMCA in 1973. She used her mother's maiden name, Hill, to avoid looking like she got jobs because of her dad. She wanted to earn her roles on her own.
She appeared in TV shows like Family. Her first big role was in the 1981 TV movie Fallen Angel. From 1981 to 1982, Dana played Gabby Gallagher in the TV series The Two of Us. Even at 17, she looked so young that police sometimes stopped her while she was driving to the studio!
In 1982, Dana starred in the movie Shoot the Moon. She also played Frankie Addams in a TV version of The Member of the Wedding. In 1983, she was in the film Cross Creek with Rip Torn and Mary Steenburgen.
Dana also made guest appearances on popular TV shows. She was in The Fall Guy and Magnum, P.I.. In Magnum, P.I., she played Willie, a 13-year-old foster child.
When she was 19, Dana starred in a TV special called Welcome Home, Jellybean. She played Geraldine "Jellybean" Oxley, a 12-year-old girl with a developmental disability. Her parents took her out of an institution to live a normal home life. She also appeared in Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre.
Movie roles
One of Dana's most famous roles was Audrey Griswold in National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985). She took over the role from another actress.
She also appeared in the 1986 film Combat Academy. In this movie, she played Cadet Sergeant Andrea Pritchett alongside George Clooney.
Voice acting career
Dana Hill was a very talented voice actress. She brought many cartoon characters to life.
