Playing for Clubs
Starting at Athletic Bilbao
Dani Aranzubia was born in Logroño, Spain. He grew up learning to play football at Athletic Bilbao's famous youth academy. He made his first team debut on June 10, 2001. This was in a home game against Real Sociedad.
For two seasons, Dani was a backup goalkeeper. But then he became the main starter for the team. He helped Athletic Bilbao qualify for the UEFA Cup in 2004. He even signed a new contract for four more years.
Later, Dani had to compete for his spot as the main goalkeeper. Another player, Gorka Iraizoz, became the team's top choice. Dani didn't play much in his last season there.
Time at Deportivo
On July 13, 2008, Dani joined Deportivo de La Coruña on a three-year deal. He helped them get into the UEFA Intertoto Cup. He was the main goalkeeper for almost the whole 2008–09 season.
On October 2, he was a hero in a UEFA Cup game against SK Brann. He saved three penalties in a shootout. This helped Deportivo win 2–0 and move forward in the competition.
Dani missed the first six games of the 2010–11 season because of an injury. But he still finished the season as Deportivo's starting goalkeeper. On February 20, 2011, he scored a goal with his head! It was in the very last minute of the game. His team drew 1–1 against UD Almería. This made him the first goalkeeper in La Liga history to score a goal during open play.
Moving to Atlético Madrid
In August 2013, Dani signed with Atlético Madrid. He was a backup goalkeeper to Thibaut Courtois. He played his first game in the UEFA Champions League on December 11, 2013. He saved a penalty kick in a 2–0 home win against FC Porto.
When the main goalkeeper was injured, Dani got to play in a league game. But he was sent off (given a red card) in the last minutes of the game. He ended his time at Atlético Madrid having played five games in total.
Playing for Spain
Dani played one game for the Spanish national team. This was on June 5, 2004, in a friendly match against Andorra. He came into the game as a substitute. He had been chosen as the third-choice goalkeeper for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament.
Before that, Dani helped Spain win the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship. He also helped them get a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He was the starting goalkeeper in both of those final games.
