Daniel James, Jr. (born February 11, 1920 – died February 25, 1978) was a very important person in American history. He was the first African-American four-star general officer in the United States military. This means he reached the highest rank an officer can achieve.

He started his journey as a pilot during World War II. He trained with the famous Tuskegee airmen, a group of African-American military pilots and airmen. General James flew planes in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He also worked as a flight instructor for the United States Air Force.

In 1975, after earning his fourth star, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). This is a very important job, helping to protect North America from air and space threats.

General James passed away from a heart attack on February 25, 1978, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on March 2, 1978. His widow, Dorothy W. James, was later buried next to him.
