The Euphaedra losinga, also known as the dark brown forester, is a type of butterfly. It belongs to the Nymphalidae family. You can find this butterfly in several countries in Africa. These include Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
About the Dark Brown Forester
The Euphaedra losinga butterfly is part of a group called the Medon Group. Butterflies in this group usually do not have spots near the edges of their hindwings. This is true for both the top and bottom sides of their wings.
E. losinga looks a lot like another butterfly called harpalyce. However, there are some key differences on the underside of its wings. The hindwing has a thin, clear white band in the middle. This band starts at the top edge and goes down to about vein 3 or 4.
Both the front and back wings have a single dark band across them. This band is often clearer than the bands on the harpalyce butterfly. The front wing also has a white band near its tip. This band is very clear on the underside, especially at the front part of the wing. You might also see one to three black dots in the cell area of both wings on the underside.
One variation, called inaequabilis, has a narrower band near the tip of its front wing. This band might look broken into spots on the underside. The white band on the underside of the hindwing can also be broken into spots.
Another similar butterfly is wardi. It looks very much like losinga. But wardi often has a violet or coppery shine near the bottom part of its wings. On the underside, both wings are a bright light green or bluish-green. Each wing has three large black spots in the cell area. The front wing has a clear white band near its tip. This band often has a thin black border at its base. The hindwing has a wider white band in the middle. This band can also have a black border at its base.
Where They Live
The dark brown forester butterfly lives in forests. It also likes areas where new trees have grown after older ones were cut down. These places often have a thick roof of leaves formed by the treetops.
Types of Dark Brown Forester
There are different types, or subspecies, of the Euphaedra losinga butterfly. They are found in different areas:
- E. l. losinga is found in Nigeria, the southern Central African Republic, and central and northern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- E. l. knoopi Hecq, 1988 is found in Nigeria.
- E. l. limita Hecq, 1978 is found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, specifically in Shaba and Kasai.
- E. l. wardi (Druce, 1874) is found in Nigeria, Cameroon, Bioko, Congo, the Central African Republic, Angola, and the western Democratic Republic of the Congo.
