Darrelle Shavar Revis (born July 14, 1985) is an American former professional football player. He played as a cornerback for 11 seasons in the National Football League (NFL).
Revis spent most of his career with the New York Jets. Many people consider him one of the greatest cornerbacks ever. Because of his amazing skill at stopping the best opposing receivers, his part of the field was called "Revis Island".
He played college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Jets picked him in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs. During his career, he was chosen for seven Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro four times. He won Super Bowl XLIX with the Patriots. Darrelle Revis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

Early Life and High School Sports
Darrelle Revis grew up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. He went to Aliquippa High School. He was a star athlete in high school.
In 2003, he was named Player of the Year by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He also earned the WPIAL Class AA Player of the Year award from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
In the state championship football game, he led Aliquippa to a big comeback win. He scored five touchdowns in that game. These included three rushing touchdowns, a punt return, and a blocked field goal return. He also threw a pass, caught a pass, and made an interception.
Revis also played basketball in high school. He helped Aliquippa win two WPIAL basketball championships. He was the team's top scorer in both his junior and senior years. He also had the most interceptions of any high school cornerback. In track and field, he was part of a champion relay team.
College Football Career
Revis played college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers. In his first year (2004), he was named a first-team freshman All-American. He played in 12 games and started 11 of them. He had 49 tackles and 12 broken-up passes. He also made two important interceptions. One interception against West Virginia helped his team win the game.
In 2005, his sophomore year, he continued to play well. He was named first-team All-Big East at cornerback. He led the Panthers with four interceptions. He also returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown. He even blocked a field goal that was returned for a score.
His junior year in 2006 was when he became famous nationally. He was considered for major awards like the Jim Thorpe Award. He scored touchdowns on two interceptions that year.
During a big game against rival West Virginia in 2006, Revis made an amazing 73-yard punt return for a touchdown. He broke many tackles on his way to the end zone. This play was so good it was nominated for "Best Play" at the 2007 ESPY Awards. It was voted the best College Football Play of the Year.

Professional Football Journey
Getting Drafted into the NFL
On January 10, 2007, Revis decided to leave college early to enter the 2007 NFL draft. He was seen as one of the top three cornerbacks available. He attended the NFL Scouting Combine but couldn't do all the drills because of a hamstring injury.
However, he impressed scouts at Pittsburgh's "Pro Day" with his speed. The New York Jets were very impressed with his skills. They traded up in the draft to pick him. The Jets moved from the 25th pick to the 14th pick to select Darrelle Revis.

New York Jets: First Time Around
Revis missed some of training camp while his contract was being worked out. On August 15, 2007, he signed a five-year deal worth about $36 million.
Rookie Season (2007)
Jets coach Eric Mangini expected Revis to play right away. Revis became the starting cornerback for the Jets. He was the first rookie cornerback for the Jets to start since 1996.
In his first game, he had 7 tackles. He got his first interception in week 8 against the Buffalo Bills. Revis played well all season. He started all 16 games. He finished his rookie year with 87 tackles and 3 interceptions. He was named to the PFWA 2007 All-Rookie Team.
Becoming "Revis Island" (2008-2009)
In 2008, Revis continued to shine. In the first game, he intercepted a pass in the end zone to save a Jets victory. A week later, he limited star receiver Randy Moss to only two catches. He also had two interceptions against the Arizona Cardinals, returning one for his first NFL touchdown.
Revis was chosen for the 2009 Pro Bowl for his great play. By 2009, he was known as the NFL's top "lockdown" cornerback. This meant he could completely shut down the best receivers. His area of the field became known as "Revis Island."
He often limited top receivers like Andre Johnson and Randy Moss to very few yards. Jets coach Rex Ryan called him the "best" cornerback in the NFL. Revis earned a Pro Bowl spot again. In the playoffs, he shut down Chad Ochocinco and made a key interception against Vincent Jackson.
Dealing with Injuries (2010-2012)
Revis missed part of training camp in 2010 for a new contract. He signed a four-year, $32 million deal. He strained his hamstring early in the season and missed some games. Despite injuries, he played well when on the field. He helped the Jets reach the AFC Championship game. He finished 2010 with 32 tackles but no interceptions.
In 2011, Revis started the season with a game-winning interception against the Dallas Cowboys. He also had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Miami Dolphins. This tied the longest interception return in Jets history. He finished 2011 with 52 tackles and 4 interceptions. He was chosen for his fourth Pro Bowl.
In 2012, Revis suffered a serious knee injury. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in week 3. This injury ended his season early.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2013)
On April 21, 2013, the Jets traded Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He signed a huge 6-year, $96 million contract. This made him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history at the time.
He made his Buccaneers debut against his old team, the Jets. He had his first interception with Tampa Bay in September. Revis was chosen for his fifth Pro Bowl that season. He had a great year with 50 tackles and 2 interceptions. However, the Buccaneers changed their defensive system, which didn't fit Revis's style. So, they released him in March 2014.
New England Patriots (2014)
Right after being released, Revis signed a 1-year contract with the New England Patriots. In his only season with the Patriots, he had 47 tackles and 2 interceptions. He was named to his sixth Pro Bowl and earned another first-team All-Pro selection.
The Patriots finished the season with a 12–4 record. In the playoffs, Revis made a key interception against Andrew Luck. This helped the Patriots reach the Super Bowl.
Revis played in Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015, against the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots won the Super Bowl 28–24. Revis recorded a sack and a tackle in the game. This was his first Super Bowl championship.
New York Jets: Second Time Around (2015-2016)
The Jets signed Revis again on March 10, 2015. He signed a five-year, $70 million contract. He was named to his seventh Pro Bowl in 2015. He finished the 2015 season with 39 tackles and five interceptions.
The 2016 season was not as strong for Revis. He finished with 53 tackles and one interception. On February 28, 2017, the Jets announced they would release Revis.
Kansas City Chiefs (2017)
On November 22, 2017, Revis signed a two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played only six games for the team, including the playoffs. He was released by the Chiefs on February 8, 2018.
Retirement from Football
On July 18, 2018, Darrelle Revis announced he was retiring from the NFL. He played for 11 seasons. The New York Jets held a small celebration for his retirement on July 24. They even made a miniature "Revis Island" to honor him.

Personal Life

Darrelle Revis is the nephew of former NFL defensive tackle Sean Gilbert. Darrelle has a daughter and a son. In December 2012, Darrelle launched his own shoe, the Nike Zoom Revis. Revis was a friend of Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller. He is also the cousin of Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead.
