Dautillos is a small town located in the Navolato area of Mexico. It's very close to sea level, only about one meter (or three feet) high.

Living by the Sea

The people of Dautillos mostly make their living from the sea. Fishing is a very important activity here. They also practice aquaculture, which is like farming fish or shellfish in controlled environments.

The shores of Dautillos are covered with mangrove swamps. These special trees grow in salty water. Many interesting animals live in these areas. You can spot Frigate birds, Ospreys, seagulls, and pelicans flying around. While the land around Dautillos is like a desert, you won't find many deer there.

People in Dautillos often gather Clams, different kinds of fish, and crabs. In the autumn and early winter, catching Prawns becomes the main fishing activity in the village. Dautillos also has many Mango trees and palm trees, which are common along the coast of Sinaloa.

About 2,270 people call Dautillos home. Most of the people living here, about 59 percent, are adults.

On average, people in Dautillos go to school for about 7.45 years. However, around 100 people in the town still don't know how to read or write. A small number of people, about 8, are from indigenous (native) groups. Only one person over the age of five still speaks an indigenous language.

Fun and Culture

Dautillos has a few nice beaches that have been cleared of mangroves. Many residents also like to visit El Tambor, which is another beach located on the Pacific Ocean.

For fun, people enjoy fishing and riding ATVs on the nearby sand dunes. Dautillos is about 47 miles (or 75 kilometers) away from the city of Culiacan.

Where is Dautillos?

The land around Dautillos is quite dry and looks like a desert. Dautillos is located near the Bay of Santa Maria, surrounded by special water areas called estuaries. To the west of the town is the huge Pacific Ocean. To the east, you can see the distant mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

The climate in Dautillos is hot and humid during the summer and fall. It gets cooler in the winter, and then slowly warms up again in the spring.
