What's in a Name?
The exact reason for David City's name is a bit of a mystery! There are a few ideas:
- Some say it was named after David Butler. He was the very first Governor of Nebraska.
- Another idea is that it was named for Phoebe Miles. Her maiden name might have been "David" or "Davids." She gave a large piece of land for the town, where the courthouse now stands.
- A third idea suggests it was named after a "Mr. Davids." He was a relative of William Miles, who owned part of the land for the town. The "s" might have been dropped to make it easier to say.
David City's official website says the second idea, about Phoebe Miles, is the most likely one.
