Playing Cricket in Australia
David Hussey first became well-known for his amazing batting skills in the 2003–04 season. He played for the Victorian Bushrangers team. In one game, he scored 212 runs without being out, helping his team win against New South Wales. He ended that season with a total of 857 runs.
Early Career Highlights
In the 2004–05 season, his longer-format cricket form wasn't as strong. However, in 2005–06, he scored 535 runs in one-day games, averaging 76.42 runs per game. He even scored 130 runs against Queensland. He won the award for the state's best limited-overs player that year.
Becoming a Star Player
In 2006–07, he again helped his team win against New South Wales by scoring 125 runs without being out. He was captaining the team and hit a six to win the game! In 2007–08, he scored over 1,000 runs in a season for the first time. This led to him being chosen for the Australian team to tour the West Indies in 2008.
He also made the second fastest one-day hundred in Australian domestic cricket history, scoring it in just 60 balls. David was named Victoria's Player of the Year in all three types of domestic cricket in 2007–08.
Big Bash League Incident
In 2013, David Hussey was involved in an incident during a Big Bash League game. It happened while he was running between the wickets.
Playing Cricket in England
David Hussey started his cricket career in England at Horsham Cricket Club. From 2004, he played for the county team Nottinghamshire.
Success with Nottinghamshire
In 2004, he scored 1208 runs for Nottinghamshire. The next year, 2005, was even better, as he scored 1231 runs. He hit two centuries and one double century, including 232 runs not out against Warwickshire. His team went on to win the championship that year.
In a later season, David scored his highest ever score: 275 runs! He hit 14 sixes in that game. He played for Nottinghamshire until the end of the 2013 season. In his final season, he helped Nottinghamshire win the YB40 final, which was their first one-day trophy since 1989.
International Cricket Career
David Hussey played four one-day internationals (ODIs) for Australia A in 2004. He scored a century against the West Indies. In September 2007, he toured Pakistan with the Australia A team and scored two centuries.
Making His Debut for Australia
David made his international Twenty20 debut for Australia against India on 1 February 2008. He didn't need to bat in that game, but he took a wicket and a catch.
He made his first ODI debut for Australia on 4 July 2008 against the West Indies. He scored 52 runs and shared a 50-run partnership with his brother, Michael. In the next game, he set a new record for Australia by scoring a half-century in just 19 balls!
First Century and Later Success
On 28 August 2009, David Hussey scored his first ODI century against Scotland, getting 111 runs off 87 balls. He continued to play for Australia in T20 International matches.
In a series against England in January 2011, he took two wickets and later scored 68 runs not out to help Australia win. He also scored 60 runs in another match against England in February 2011.
Even though he had a great batting average in first-class cricket, David Hussey was never chosen to play a Test Match for Australia. He is one of the few batsmen with such a high average who didn't play Test cricket.
In the 2011–2012 tri-series (a tournament with three teams) held in Australia, David Hussey scored the third most runs among all players, with 439 runs and an average of 54.88.
Indian Premier League (IPL)
David Hussey was chosen to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He had a good first season, scoring 319 runs. He even won a "man of the match" award for scoring 38 runs not out to win a game.
In the fourth season of the IPL, he was bought by Kings XI Punjab for a large amount of money, US$1.4 million. This made him one of the most expensive overseas players in the IPL at that time.
In the 2012 Indian Premier League, David Hussey was the captain for Kings XI Punjab when their regular captain, Adam Gilchrist, was injured. Later, in 2014, he played for the Chennai Super Kings.
After retiring from playing, David Hussey became the chief mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2019 IPL.
