David Leroy Stanton was an American soldier who became a Brigadier General during the American Civil War. He led the 1st Maryland Infantry Regiment in the last part of the war. He was recognized for his bravery at the Battle of Five Forks.
A Young Soldier's Journey
David Leroy Stanton was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 2, 1840. Before becoming a soldier, he worked as a merchant.
When the American Civil War began, David joined the Union Army on May 15, 1861. He started as a 1st Sergeant in the 1st Maryland Infantry Regiment. President Abraham Lincoln himself helped him enlist! He quickly moved up, becoming a 2nd Lieutenant on November 1, 1861.
Rising Through the Ranks
David continued to earn promotions. He became a 1st Lieutenant on December 12, 1862. Then, on March 7, 1864, he was promoted to Captain of Company I. During this time, he fought in important battles. These included the Battle of Front Royal, the Harris Farm Engagement, and the Battle of Globe Tavern.
His leadership skills were clear. He was promoted to Major on December 2, 1864. Soon after, he became a Lieutenant Colonel on February 21, 1865.
Leading in the Final Battles
David Stanton became a full Colonel on March 20, 1865. This was just as the Appomattox campaign was starting. He was given command of the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division of the V Corps.
During the intense Battle of Five Forks, Colonel Richard N. Bowerman was badly wounded. Colonel Stanton quickly stepped in and took charge of Bowerman's soldiers. He led them for the rest of the battle. For his brave actions and leadership, Stanton was given the honorary rank of Brigadier General on April 1, 1865. This special recognition was for his "gallant conduct" (meaning very brave actions) at the Battle of Five Forks in Virginia. This honor was officially confirmed in 1867.
David Leroy Stanton passed away on December 26, 1919, in Baltimore, Maryland.
