What is Economic Democracy?
David Schweickart has developed an idea called "economic democracy". He explains this idea in his book After Capitalism and other writings. He says that economic democracy is a type of market economy. It has some important parts:
- Workplace self-management: This means that workers in a company help manage it. They can even elect their supervisors.
- Public banking for investments: A special type of public banking helps manage where money is invested. This money helps new and existing businesses grow.
- A market for goods: Companies still compete to sell their products. They also buy and sell raw materials and tools in a market.
- Fair trade between nations: There are rules to make sure that trade between different countries is fair.
In this system, companies and factories are owned by society. However, the workers manage them. These businesses compete in markets to sell what they make. Any profit they earn is shared among the workers. Each company pays a tax based on the money they use. This tax money then goes to public banks. These banks use the money to help expand current businesses and start new ones.
