What is Economic Democracy?
David Schweickart is well-known for his ideas on "economic democracy." He explains these ideas in his book After Capitalism and other writings. He says that economic democracy is a type of market economy. It has several main features:
- Workplace self-management: This means workers manage their own workplaces. They even get to choose their supervisors.
- Public banking for investments: A special type of public banking manages money for new businesses or for growing existing ones.
- A market for goods: Businesses still compete in a market to sell their products and buy what they need.
- Fair trade between nations: There are rules to make sure trade between different countries is fair for everyone.
In this system, society owns the companies and factories. But the workers manage these businesses. The companies then compete in markets to sell their products. Any profit made is shared among the workers. Each company pays a tax based on the money they use. This tax money then goes to public banks. These banks use the money to help new and existing businesses grow.
