David Slagger was born on June 22, 1962. He is a politician from the Maliseet Tribe in Maine. He served as a representative for his tribe in the Maine House of Representatives. This is like being a voice for his community in the state government.

David Slagger was first appointed to this role on January 4, 2012. He held the position for a short time. This was until the Maliseet Tribe could hold its own election. On December 22, 2012, tribal members elected Henry John Bear as their first official Tribal Representative. David Slagger did not try to be re-elected for this position.

David Slagger's Role in Government

Representing the Maliseet Tribe

David Slagger was one of three representatives from Maine's Native American tribes. These representatives served in the House of Representatives. They were chosen by members of their own tribes.

These tribal representatives had a special role. They could speak and share ideas, but they could not vote on all issues. They also needed help from other representatives to introduce new laws.

David Slagger decided not to seek another term as a Maliseet representative. This was because of the limits on what tribal representatives could do. For example, they could not vote on every issue.

In May 2012, Slagger decided to run for a different political seat. This was a regular seat in District 22, not a tribal one. He ran as an independent candidate, meaning he was not part of a major political party. He ran against Stacy Guerin but did not win the election.

Running for Governor

In February 2013, David Slagger started a campaign to run for Governor of Maine. This election was planned for 2014. He first planned to run as a Democrat.

Later, in April, he changed his mind. He joined the Green Independent Party. He then tried to get their support to become their candidate for governor.

However, he soon left the Green Independent Party. He continued his campaign as an independent candidate. This meant he was not officially linked to any political party. David Slagger did not get enough support to be on the ballot for the November 2014 election.

Personal Life

David Slagger grew up in Aroostook County, Maine. Today, he lives in Kenduskeag in Penobscot County. He lives there with his wife, who is from the Mi'kmaq Tribe, and their three children.

In September 2005, while studying at the University of Maine, Slagger received an internship. This was at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. The museum is located in Washington, D.C. At the time he became a representative in 2012, David Slagger was working on his advanced degree at the University of Maine.
