History of Deephaven
Deephaven was first settled in 1876 by Charles Gibson, a lawyer from Saint Louis. He built a summer house called "Northome." Gibson then started telling people about the area as a great place for vacations, especially for people from the southern United States.
In 1879, he helped build the Hotel Saint Louis. This was a large hotel with 150 rooms. A railway line, the Minneapolis and Saint Louis Railway, was built to serve the hotel and local vacationers.
Minnetonka Yacht Club and Racing Scows
The Minnetonka Yacht Club started in Deephaven in 1882. It became an official club in 1889. One of its founders, Hazen Burton, built a home named "Chimo" in Deephaven in 1890. A train station was built near his home. This allowed the Burtons to travel easily to their department store in Minneapolis. The name "Deephaven" comes from the name of this train station.
In 1893, Hazen Burton asked a local boat builder, Arthur Dyer, to create a new type of sailboat. This boat was called a racing scow. When the first racing scow, named Onawa, raced in 1893, it won almost every race. It was so fast that it was disqualified from some races! Later, the rules were changed, and racing scows became popular all over the world. You can see the original Onawa boat at the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society Museum in nearby Excelsior.
Later Years and Notable Events
By the 1890s, Lake Minnetonka became less popular as a vacation spot. The Hotel Saint Louis struggled financially and was torn down in 1907. In its place, Walter Donald Douglas and his wife Mahala built a large 27-room home called "Walden." Walter Donald Douglas was a wealthy businessman from the Quaker Oats company.
Sadly, Douglas died in the Titanic disaster in 1912. However, his wife Mahala and her maid, Berthe Leroy, survived. Mahala returned to Deephaven and lived there until she passed away in 1945.
The Cottagewood General Store in Deephaven opened in 1895. It was started by Ralph M. Chapman. The store sold groceries to tourists visiting Lake Minnetonka. Today, it is still one of Deephaven's most famous places.
Geography
Deephaven covers an area of about 2.43 square miles (6.29 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. Minnetonka Boulevard is one of the main roads in the city.
