Delta Force: Black Hawk Down is an exciting first-person shooter video game. In this type of game, you see the action through the eyes of your character. The game was made by NovaLogic.
It first came out for Microsoft Windows computers on March 23, 2003. Later, it was released for Mac OS X in July 2004. Players on PlayStation 2 and Xbox could play it starting July 26, 2005.
This game is the sixth one in the popular Delta Force series. It takes place in the early 1990s in Somalia. This was during a real-life peacekeeping mission called the Unified Task Force. Most missions happen in the southern Jubba Valley and the capital city, Mogadishu. The game also lets you create your own missions with a special editor. The game was inspired by the movie Black Hawk Down.
Game Story
You start the game as a soldier in a special group called Task Force Ranger. You lead a small team of three members: Huck, Mother, and Preacher. Your team is part of the Unified Task Force peacekeeping effort during the Somali Civil War.
After the third mission, you continue playing as the same soldier. You then join the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, also known as Delta Force. Here, you take part in Operation Gothic Serpent. This was a military operation during the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993.
Later in the game, you still play as that soldier. You are sent to work with the 3rd Ranger Battalion and the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta. The very last mission of the game shows a different outcome from real history. In this mission, you and your team go on a special operation to deal with a key leader named Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
How to Play
The way Delta Force: Black Hawk Down plays is quite different from older games in the series. Earlier Delta Force games focused on fighting enemies from far away in open areas. They also let you choose how to complete missions.
Black Hawk Down is more about close quarters combat in city areas. The missions follow a set path, much like games such as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Some features from older games, like how bullets fly or how your weapon moves, were simplified. This made the game more focused on action.
You usually have a team of three computer-controlled soldiers with you. You can give them simple commands. For example, you can tell them to stop shooting, stay in one spot, or throw a grenade.
Like other Delta Force games, the main story is split into different missions. The story is mostly linear, meaning it goes in a set order. However, you often have three missions available at once. This lets you choose which one to complete next. Finishing a mission saves your progress and usually unlocks a new one. You can also replay any mission you have already finished from an "instant action" list.
Playing with Others
Besides the main story, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down has multiplayer modes. You can play with friends on a local network (LAN) or online. Up to 50 players can join a single match. This was a record for console games at the time!
The online multiplayer uses a system called NovaWorld. It keeps track of your stats, gives you higher ranks as you play, and helps you find other players. There are many ways to play together. These include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and King of the Hill. There are also modes where you work together to complete goals. Just like in the two previous Delta Force games, you can pick from different character types. Each type has its own special abilities.
Game Creation
Delta Force: Black Hawk Down uses a game engine based on Comanche 4. This engine allowed for more detailed graphics and cool visual effects. It could also use shaders, which make light and shadows look more realistic.
Also, vehicles could move freely anywhere, not just on set paths. The computer-controlled drivers could even avoid obstacles. This was the first engine in the Delta Force series that worked on more than just PC computers.
Extra Content
In 2004, an expansion pack was released. It was called Team Sabre. This extra content was for the PC and PlayStation 2 versions of the game. It added two new campaigns. These new adventures took place in Colombia and Iran.
