Dengie is a small village in Essex, England. It is part of the Maldon district. In 2011, about 119 people lived there.
The village gives its name to the larger Dengie peninsula. This is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. It also names the Dengie Special Protection Area. This is a special place that protects wild birds.
What's in a Name?
The name 'Dengie' is very old. It was first written down between the years 709 and 745. Back then, it was called Deningei. Later, in a famous book from 1086 called the Domesday Book, it was written as Daneseia.
The name 'Dengie' means 'Dene's island'. It could also mean 'the island of Dene's people'. This suggests that long ago, a person named Dene or their group lived on this land.
St James' Church
The village has a beautiful old church. It is called St James' Church. This church was built in the 14th century. That means it is over 600 years old! It is still the main church for the village today.
Dengie During World War II
During the Second World War, Dengie played an important role. The area offshore, known as Dengie Flats, was used by planes. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the American Air Force (USAAF) used it. They practiced bombing and shooting there.
Many planes also made emergency landings near Dengie. These planes were often flying to or from RAF Bradwell Bay. This was a nearby airfield.
From 1942 to 1945, Dengie had a special radar station. This radar helped warn people about enemy ships. It also detected low-flying aircraft. Sometimes, it even spotted V1 Flying Bombs. These were also known as "doodlebugs." They were early types of missiles used by the enemy.
Dengie on TV
Did you know Dengie has been on TV? The marshy areas of Dengie were once used for filming. An episode of the popular science fiction show Doctor Who was filmed there.
