Denis Leonidovich Matsuev (born June 11, 1975) is a famous Russian pianist. He is mostly known for playing classical music. However, he also enjoys performing jazz music sometimes.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Denis Matsuev was born in Irkutsk, a city in the Soviet Union. Both of his parents were musicians. His mother taught piano, and his father was a pianist and composer. Denis showed his musical talent very early. When he was just three years old, he heard a tune on TV and played it back on the piano at home. His father then became his first piano teacher.
Denis studied music in Irkutsk until he was 15. In 1990, he won a special award at a competition. This award gave him money to study music in Moscow. He also went on tours in Europe and the United States with other talented young musicians from Russia.
Moving to Moscow and Big Wins
In 1991, Denis and his parents moved to Moscow. He continued his music studies at the Central Music School. This school is part of the famous Moscow Conservatory. In 1994, he took part in his first international piano competition. This competition was in Johannesburg, South Africa. Denis won the top prize there.
Later that year, he joined the Moscow Conservatory as a student. He studied with famous teachers like Aleksey Nasedkin and Sergei Dorensky. In 1998, when he was 23, Denis Matsuev won the very important International Tchaikovsky Competition. This win helped him become known around the world.
Leading Music Festivals
Denis Matsuev is not just a performer. He also helps organize many music events. He is a co-director of the "Annecy Classic Festival" in France. He also leads two big music festivals in Russia. One is called "Stars on Baikal" and takes place in his hometown of Irkutsk. The other is the "Crescendo" music festival.
He has also been the artistic director for other international music events. These include the "Astana Piano Passion" Festival in 2012. In 2013, he directed the "Sberbank DEBUT" Festival in Kyiv.
Olympic Performance and Recognition
In February 2014, Denis Matsuev was part of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He carried the Olympic torch, which is a great honor. He also performed at the closing ceremony of the games.
In 2018, Matsuev received the Order of Honour from Russia. This is a special award given for great achievements.
