A big part of Dickson Township is inside the Manistee National Forest, which is a huge natural area. The Manistee River flows through the eastern and southern parts of the township. You'll also find the Tippy Dam here, which creates the Tippy Dam Pond.

Brethren is a small, unincorporated community within Dickson Township. It's located about 15 miles (24 km) east of the city of Manistee. This community is also part of the large Manistee National Forest.

History of Brethren
Brethren was started in 1900 by a man named Samuel S. Thorpe. He created it as a settlement for the German Baptist Brethren Church. A post office was opened in 1901, and Thorpe was the first postmaster. This post office still serves the area today with ZIP code 49619. A train station for the Pere Marquette Railway was also built here in 1901.
