History of Brethren

Brethren was started in 1900 by a man named Samuel S. Thorpe. He created it as a settlement for the German Baptist Brethren Church. A post office was opened in 1901, and Thorpe was the first postmaster. This post office still serves the area today with ZIP code 49619. A train station for the Pere Marquette Railway was also built here in 1901.
