The Story of Dillon
Early Times in Kansas
For thousands of years, the vast Great Plains of North America were home to nomadic Native American tribes. "Nomadic" means they moved from place to place, often following animal herds like buffalo.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, France claimed ownership of large parts of North America. In 1762, after a big war called the French and Indian War, France secretly gave this land to Spain.
How Kansas Became Part of the U.S.
In 1802, Spain returned most of this land to France. Then, in 1803, the United States bought a huge area, including what is now Kansas, from France. This famous deal was called the Louisiana Purchase. It was a massive 828,000 square miles of land!
In 1854, the area became known as the Kansas Territory. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state. Dickinson County, where Dillon is located, was created in 1857.
Dillon became an important stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. A post office was opened in Dillon in 1872, helping people send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing in 1944.
