Dino Babers' Early Life and Playing Days
Dino Babers was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He grew up in San Diego, California. He went to the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1979 to 1983. While there, he played football for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. He played as a running back and a defensive back.
Dino Babers' Coaching Journey
Starting as an Assistant Coach
Babers started his coaching career in 1984. He was a graduate assistant at the University of Hawaii. A graduate assistant helps coaches while also studying for a master's degree. After that, he coached at many different schools. He held important roles like offensive coordinator at Arizona and Texas A&M. An offensive coordinator is in charge of the team's offense. He was also an assistant head coach at UCLA.
Becoming a Head Coach
After working as an assistant at Baylor for four years, Babers got his first head coaching job. On December 9, 2011, he became the head football coach at Eastern Illinois University. In his two seasons there, his team, the Eastern Illinois Panthers, made it to the playoffs twice. A famous player from his time there was quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo later became a professional football player.
On December 18, 2013, Babers moved to Bowling Green State University as their new head coach. He led the Bowling Green team to win the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship in 2015. This was a big achievement for the team.
Coaching at Syracuse University
On December 5, 2015, Dino Babers became the head coach at Syracuse University. In 2018, his team had a fantastic season, winning 10 games. Because of this success, he received a contract extension. However, after that great season, Syracuse had only two more winning seasons during his time there. He was no longer the head coach at Syracuse after November 19, 2023.
Return to Arizona
In February 2024, the new head coach at the University of Arizona, Brent Brennan, hired Babers. Babers became the offensive coordinator for Arizona. Interestingly, Brennan had been a graduate assistant at Arizona when Babers was the offensive coordinator there in 2000. Babers' contract with Arizona was not renewed after the 2024 season.
