Professional Football Career
Jimmy Garoppolo was seen as one of the top quarterback prospects for the 2014 NFL draft.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots chose Jimmy in the second round of the 2014 draft. He was the 62nd player picked overall. He signed a four-year contract with the Patriots on June 2, 2014.
2014 Season: Rookie Year
Jimmy made his first NFL appearance in Week 4 of the 2014 season. He threw his first career touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. He completed six of seven passes for 70 yards in that game. In his rookie season, Jimmy played in six games. He completed 19 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown. Even though he didn't play in Super Bowl XLIX, he helped the Patriots' defense prepare for the game. The Patriots won the Super Bowl that year.
2015 Season
In 2015, Jimmy played in five games. He mostly came in as a relief player.
2016 Season: First Starts
The Patriots' starting quarterback, Tom Brady, was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. This meant Jimmy Garoppolo became the starting quarterback. In the first game, he completed 24 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. In the next game, he threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns. However, he left the game with a shoulder injury. This injury kept him out for the next two games. Tom Brady returned in Week 5. Jimmy was active for Super Bowl LI, which the Patriots won, but he did not play in the game.
2017 Season: Trade to 49ers
Many teams were interested in trading for Jimmy during the offseason. On October 31, 2017, the Patriots traded him to the San Francisco 49ers.
Jimmy made his 49ers debut on November 26, 2017. He threw a 10-yard touchdown pass on his final play of the game. On November 28, he was named the starting quarterback for the 49ers. He led the 49ers to five straight wins to end the season. This was a big change for a team that had only won one game before he started. He finished the 2017 season with 1,560 passing yards and seven touchdowns. Because he was on the Patriots' team when they made it to Super Bowl LII, he also earned a bonus payment.
On February 8, 2018, Jimmy signed a five-year contract with the 49ers. At the time, it was the largest contract in NFL history based on how much he would earn each year.

2018 Season: Injury
In Week 3 of the 2018 season, Jimmy threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns. However, he left the game with a left knee injury. It was later found that he had torn his ACL. This injury ended his season early. The 49ers finished the season with a 4–12 record without him.

The 49ers won their division and secured home-field advantage for the playoffs. Jimmy finished the 2019 season with 3,978 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He was also a runner-up for the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.
In the playoffs, the 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers. This sent them to Super Bowl LIV. In the Super Bowl against the Chiefs, Jimmy completed 20 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown. However, the 49ers lost the game 31–20.

He returned in Week 5 but was benched at halftime because he wasn't fully recovered. He played again in Week 6 and Week 7. In Week 8, he re-injured his ankle and was placed on injured reserve. He did not play for the rest of the season.
2021 Season: NFC Championship Game
Jimmy was named the starting quarterback for the 2021 season. He threw for 314 yards and a touchdown in the first game. He missed a game in Week 5 due to a calf injury. In Week 8, he had two rushing touchdowns and 322 passing yards. In the final game of the regular season, he helped the 49ers come back from a big deficit to win in overtime. This win sent the team to the playoffs. Jimmy played in 15 games, throwing for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for three touchdowns.
In the playoffs, the 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys and upset the Green Bay Packers. This led them to the NFC Championship Game against the Rams. Jimmy threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns in that game. However, he threw a costly interception late in the game, and the 49ers lost 20–17.
2022 Season: Another Injury
Before the 2022 season, Trey Lance was named the starting quarterback over Jimmy. However, Jimmy agreed to stay with the team on a one-year contract. In Week 2, Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury. This meant Jimmy became the starting quarterback again. He threw for 154 yards and a touchdown in that game. In Week 13, Jimmy injured his foot and was expected to miss the rest of the season. He did not return to play. Without Jimmy, the 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game but lost.
Las Vegas Raiders
On March 17, 2023, Jimmy signed a three-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. This reunited him with Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, who was his offensive coordinator with the Patriots.
On October 31, 2023, Jimmy was benched by the Raiders. He had led the NFL in interceptions and the team had a 3–5 record. The Raiders released him on March 13, 2024.
Los Angeles Rams
Jimmy signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams on March 19, 2024. He was suspended for the first two games of the 2024 season. This was for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He did not play during the preseason. After his suspension, he was the backup to Matthew Stafford. Jimmy played in the final regular season game when the Rams rested their starters. He completed 27 passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
On March 10, 2025, Jimmy re-signed with the Rams for another year.
