James Richard Garoppolo (born in 1991), often called "Jimmy G", is an American professional football player. He is a quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams in the National Football League (NFL).
Before joining the NFL, Jimmy played college football for the Eastern Illinois Panthers. He set new school records for passing yards and touchdowns. In his senior year, he won the Walter Payton Award, which is a big honor for offensive players.
The New England Patriots picked Jimmy in the 2014 NFL draft. He spent his first four seasons as a backup to the famous quarterback Tom Brady. During this time, he was part of two teams that won the Super Bowl.
Later, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. He helped the team turn things around by winning their last five games that season. In 2019, he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl LIV. He also helped them reach the NFC Championship Game in 2021. However, injuries often kept him off the field. After another injury in 2022, Jimmy played one year for the Las Vegas Raiders before joining the Rams.

Jimmy Garoppolo grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He is the third of four sons. His parents are Denise and Tony Garoppolo Sr.
His family is a "tight-knit, big Italian family." His grandparents on his father's side came from Italy. His grandparents on his mother's side had Polish and German backgrounds.
High School Football and Baseball
Jimmy went to Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. He played both quarterback and linebacker for the school's football team. In his junior and senior years, he threw for over 3,100 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Besides football, Jimmy was also a pitcher in baseball. He said that baseball was his "first love" when he was a kid. He chose to play football at Eastern Illinois over other college offers.

First Year at Eastern Illinois
In his first year (2010), Jimmy started eight games. He threw for 1,639 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer Team.
Setting Records and Winning Awards
After his first year, Jimmy started every game for Eastern Illinois.

Professional Football Career
Jimmy Garoppolo was seen as one of the best quarterback prospects for the 2014 NFL draft.
New England Patriots Years (2014–2017)
The New England Patriots picked Jimmy in the second round of the 2014 draft. He was the 62nd player chosen overall. He signed a four-year contract with the team.
Rookie Season (2014)
Jimmy played his first regular season game in Week 4. He led the Patriots on a scoring drive and threw his first career touchdown pass. He completed six of seven passes for 70 yards.
In his rookie year, Jimmy played in six games. He completed 19 of 27 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown. Even though he didn't play in Super Bowl XLIX, he helped the team prepare for the game.
Backup Role (2015–2017)
In 2015, Jimmy played in five games, mostly in relief. He completed one pass for six yards.
In 2016, starting quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for four games. Jimmy was named the starting quarterback for the first game. He completed 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown in a win against the Arizona Cardinals. In the next game, he threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns before getting a shoulder injury. This injury kept him out for two games.
In 2017, there were many rumors about Jimmy being traded. However, he stayed with the Patriots for the start of the season.
San Francisco 49ers Years (2017–2022)
On October 31, 2017, the Patriots traded Jimmy to the San Francisco 49ers.
Joining the 49ers (2017)
Jimmy played his first game for the 49ers on November 26. He threw a 10-yard touchdown pass on his final play. He was named the starting quarterback for Week 13.
He led the 49ers to five straight wins to end the 2017 season. This made him the first quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004 to win his first seven career starts. With Jimmy as quarterback, the 49ers scored on 62% of their drives. He finished the 2017 season with 1,560 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions.
In February 2018, Jimmy signed a five-year contract with the 49ers. At the time, it was one of the largest contracts in NFL history for a quarterback.
Injury in 2018
In Week 3 of the 2018 season, Jimmy suffered a left knee injury. It was later found that he tore his ACL, which ended his season early. The 49ers finished the season with a 4–12 record without him.
Super Bowl Appearance (2019)

Jimmy returned from his injury for the 2019 season opener. He threw for 166 yards and a touchdown in a win. In Week 9, he had 317 passing yards and four touchdowns against the Cardinals.
He led the 49ers to a 13–3 record, winning their division and getting home-field advantage for the playoffs. He finished the 2019 season with 3,978 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
In the playoffs, the 49ers won the Divisional Round and the NFC Championship. In Super Bowl LIV against the Chiefs, Jimmy completed 20 of 31 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown. However, the 49ers lost the game 31–20 after the Chiefs scored many points late in the game.
More Injuries (2020–2022)
In 2020, Jimmy suffered an ankle sprain in Week 2 and missed several games. He later re-aggravated the injury and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
In 2021, Jimmy was named the starter over rookie Trey Lance. He played in 15 games, missing two due to injury. He threw for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The 49ers made it to the playoffs with a 10–7 record. They won the Wild Card and Divisional Rounds. In the NFC Championship against the Rams, Jimmy threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, but the 49ers lost a close game.
In 2022, Trey Lance was named the starter. However, Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Jimmy took over as the starting quarterback again. In Week 13, he injured his foot and missed the rest of the season. The 49ers still had a great season, but lost in the NFC Championship Game.
Las Vegas Raiders (2023)
On March 17, 2023, Jimmy signed a three-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. He reunited with coach Josh McDaniels, who was his offensive coordinator with the Patriots.
On October 31, 2023, Jimmy was benched as the starter. He had led the NFL in interceptions and the team had a 3–5 record. He was released by the Raiders in March 2024.
Los Angeles Rams (2024–present)
Jimmy signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams on March 19, 2024. He was suspended for the first two games of the 2024 season for violating a league rule. After his suspension, he was the backup to Matthew Stafford. He played in the final regular season game, throwing for 334 yards and two touchdowns.
