Dirty Lettuce is a special restaurant in Portland, Oregon. It's owned by a Black entrepreneur and serves delicious vegan food. This food is inspired by Southern, Cajun, and Creole cuisine styles. The owner, Alkebulan Moroski, started the business as a food cart in 2020. Then, in 2021, he opened a full restaurant.
What's on the Menu?
Dirty Lettuce is famous for its plant-based versions of classic Southern dishes. They make "meats" from plants, like barbecue "ribs" made from seitan. They also have fried "chicken" made from Ota tofu.
Some of the yummy side dishes include:
- Fried okra
- Jambalaya
- Creamy macaroni and cheese
- Sour cream and onion mashed potatoes
- Southern-style green leaf vegetables
- A Nachitoches meat pie (without meat!)
- Bowls similar to famous fast-food bowls
- Shrimp-and-grit fritters (also plant-based)
- Sweet candied yams
- Fluffy corn muffins
How Dirty Lettuce Started
Alkebulan Moroski started Dirty Lettuce with help from his mom, Kim. They began with a food cart in a place called Shady Pines in northeast Portland. This was in early 2020.
Because it was so popular, Alkebulan decided to open a real restaurant. This new place opened in May 2021. It's located on Northeast Fremont Street, near the Cully and Rose City Park neighborhoods. He had hoped to keep the food cart running too, but the Shady Pines area closed down later in 2021.
