This division was created in 1968. It was named after a very important person, James Scullin. He was the Prime Minister of Australia from 1929 to 1932.

His son, Harry Jenkins, then became the MP for Scullin. He also held important roles in Parliament. He was the Deputy Speaker from 1993 to 1996. Then he became the second Deputy Speaker from 1996 to 2007. Finally, he followed in his father's footsteps and became the Speaker from 2007 until 2011.
