The Dix Range is a group of mountains in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of northeastern New York State. These mountains are found in the High Peaks area. This region is southeast of Mount Marcy and the Ausable valley.
The Dix Range gets its name from a famous person named John Adams Dix. He was an important leader in New York. He served as the Secretary of State for New York's Governor William Marcy. Later, he became a Senator, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, and even a Governor of New York himself.
There is one special mountain in the range that used to be called East Dix. In 2014, its name was changed to Grace Peak. This was done to honor Grace Leach Hudowalski (1906–2004). She was the ninth person and the first woman to climb all 46 of the highest mountains in the Adirondacks. She achieved this amazing feat in 1937.
Mountains of the Dix Range
The Dix Range includes several important mountains. These are Hough Peak, Macomb Mountain, Grace Peak, South Dix, and Dix Mountain. Dix Mountain is very tall, being the sixth highest peak in New York State.
Size and Shape of the Range
The Dix Range stretches for about 12 miles (19 km) (19 kilometers) long. It is also about 9 miles (14 km) (14 kilometers) wide. The mountains form a unique "V" shape. Macomb Mountain is located at the very tip of this "V" shape.
