Hough Peak is a mountain located in Essex County, New York, within the beautiful Adirondack Park. It's part of the Dix Range, a group of mountains in the park.

This peak is named after Franklin B. Hough (1822–1885). He was a very important person who helped start the idea of protecting forests in the United States. He is often called the "father of American forestry." Hough Peak stands between Dix Mountain to its north and South Dix to its south.

Where Hough Peak's Water Flows

Water from the east side of Hough Peak flows into the South Fork of the Boquet River. This river then joins Lake Champlain, a large lake that stretches into Canada. From there, the water travels through the Richelieu River and the Saint Lawrence River before reaching the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

On the west side, water from Hough Peak flows into Lillian Brook. This brook then joins the East Inlet of Elk Lake. From Elk Lake, the water enters The Branch of the Schroon River, which eventually flows into the famous Hudson River. Finally, the water reaches New York Bay near New York City.

Part of the Wilderness

Hough Peak is located inside the Dix Mountain Wilderness Area. This area is a special part of Adirondack State Park where nature is protected. It's a place where people can enjoy hiking and exploring the wild outdoors.
