Meet South Dix

South Dix is a tall mountain in the beautiful Adirondack State Park. It stands over 4,000 feet high!

It's part of the Adirondack High Peaks, which are 46 mountains in New York that are over 4,000 feet tall. South Dix is the 37th highest among them.

This mountain has some neighbors too. To its northeast, you'll find Grace Peak. To the northwest is Hough Peak, and to the southwest is Macomb Mountain.

Why the Name Change?

The Dix Range, including South Dix, was originally named after John Adams Dix. He was an important person in New York's history.

John A. Dix (1798–1879) served as the Secretary of State for New York in 1837. Later, he even became the Governor of New York.

The mountain's name is being changed to Carson Peak to honor Russell M.L. Carson (1884–1961). He was an author who wrote a famous book called Peaks and People of the Adirondacks. This book helped many people learn about the Adirondack mountains.

Where the Water Goes

Mountains like South Dix are like giant sponges, collecting rainwater and snowmelt. This water then flows down the mountain in different directions.

Water from the southeast side of South Dix takes a different path.

  • It drains into West Mill Brook.
  • This brook then joins the Schroon River.
  • The Schroon River flows into the famous Hudson River.
  • Eventually, this water reaches New York Bay near New York City.

On the west side of South Dix, water flows into Lillian Brook.

  • Lillian Brook leads into the East Inlet of Elk Lake.
  • From Elk Lake, the water enters The Branch of the Schroon River, joining the flow towards the Hudson River.

Part of a Special Park

South Dix is located inside the Dix Mountain Wilderness Area. This area is part of the huge Adirondack State Park.

Wilderness areas are special places where nature is protected. They are kept wild so that plants, animals, and natural landscapes can thrive without much human interference. It's a great place for hiking and enjoying the outdoors!
