Dome Peak is a very tall and icy mountain located in the Glacier Peak Wilderness area of Washington. It's part of the North Cascades mountain range. Because Dome Peak is in a remote area and is quite high, it's not a common spot for mountain climbers.

The mountain is found at the very southeast corner of Skagit County. It also marks the southern end of a famous climbing path called the Ptarmigan Traverse. Albert H. Sylvester, who was the first forest supervisor of the Wenatchee National Forest, gave the mountain its name.

Discover Dome Peak's Unique Features

Dome Peak has two main tops, or summits. These two summits are connected by a narrow ridge, which is like a thin path between them. The summit on the northeast side is actually taller than the one on the southwest side.

Glaciers and Ice on Dome Peak

Dome Peak is home to several large ice formations called glaciers. The Chickamin Glacier is located to the north of the peak. The Dome Glacier can be found on the west side. On the southeast, there's a steep rock face. Another glacier, the Dana Glacier, is on the north side of a ridge that connects Dome Peak to a nearby mountain called Spire Point.

Who First Climbed Dome Peak?

Climbing Dome Peak is a big challenge. The higher northeast summit was first successfully climbed on August 1, 1936. Two climbers named George Freed and Eric Larson were the first to reach its top.

The southwest summit was also climbed for the first time in 1936, just a bit earlier. On July 5, 1936, Forest Farr, Norval Grigg, and Don Blair made the first ascent of this slightly lower peak.
