Don Benito is a town and municipality in Spain. It is located in the province of Badajoz, in the region of Extremadura. The town is near the left bank of the Guadiana river. In 2014, about 37,011 people lived there.

History of Don Benito
Don Benito started in the 15th century. It was founded by people who had to leave their old town, Don Llorente. They left because their town was often flooded by the Guadiana river.
Battles and Mergers
On March 28, 1809, a big battle happened near Don Benito. It was part of the Peninsular War. French soldiers fought against Spanish troops near a town called Medellín, which is about 9 kilometers away. The French won this battle.
More recently, in 2021, the government of Don Benito worked with the nearby town of Villanueva de la Serena. Their goal was to join the two towns into one larger municipality. People in both towns voted on this idea in February 2022. Both towns agreed to the merger. Don Benito's vote was very close, with 66.2% voting yes, just above the 66.0% needed.

Getting Around Don Benito
Don Benito has a railway station. This station is part of a train line that connects Ciudad Real and Badajoz. This line is also part of an international route that links Madrid in Spain with Lisbon in Portugal.
There was also a plan to build a tram system in Don Benito and nearby Villanueva de la Serena. However, this project has not been finished yet. The town is also the end point of the EXA2 motorway, which comes from Miajadas.
