Donald Cameron of Lochiel (born 1976) is a Scottish politician. He is a member of the Scottish Conservatives party. From 2016 to 2024, he was a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP). He represented the Highlands and Islands area.
In 2024, he became a special government minister for Scotland. This role is called the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland. He also became a life peer, which means he was given a special title for life. This made him a member of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament. Donald Cameron also holds an important family title. In 2023, he became the 28th Lochiel. This means he is the traditional chief of Clan Cameron.
Early Life and Education
Donald Cameron was born in London on November 26, 1976. His father was Donald Angus Cameron of Lochiel. His mother was Lady Cecil Cameron.
He went to Harrow School for his early education. After that, he studied at Oriel College, Oxford. He earned a top degree in modern history. Later, he studied law at City, University of London. In 2005, he became a lawyer. He worked as a lawyer for ten years. He helped people with different types of law, including public and farming law.
Political Career
Donald Cameron first tried to become a Member of the UK Parliament. He ran in elections in 2010 and 2015. He did not win these elections.
In 2016, he ran for the Scottish Parliament. He was elected as an MSP for the Highlands and Islands. This is a large area in Scotland. After he was elected, he took on many important roles. He worked in the Scottish Conservative party's "shadow cabinet." A shadow cabinet is a group of politicians from the opposition party. They watch over the government's work.
He was in charge of different areas, like health and sport. He also looked after finance and the environment. He helped set up a group focused on health differences. He also supported groups for people with MS and for the Scottish Gaelic language.
In 2023, his father passed away. Donald Cameron then became the 28th Lochiel. This is a very old and important family title. It means he is the leader of the Clan Cameron.
In February 2024, Donald Cameron took on a new role. He became the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland. This meant he worked for the UK government. To take this job, he left his position as an MSP. He was then given the title of Baron Cameron of Lochiel. This made him a member of the House of Lords.
