Dorothy-Marie "Dot" Jones (born January 4, 1964) is an American actress and a retired athlete. She is famous for playing many roles in television shows. Before acting, she was a champion athlete in shot put and arm wrestling.

Jones is best known for playing Coach Shannon Beiste in the musical TV show Glee. She started as a guest star in the second season and later became a main character. For her role in Glee, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards. You might also know her as Coach Kelly in Lizzie McGuire.

Early Life and Sports Career

Dot-Marie Jones was born in Turlock, California, and grew up in Hilmar, California. She became interested in strength sports when she was young. In middle school, she started competing in track and field.

At Hilmar High School, Jones was a champion weight lifter. She was even named female athlete of the year. She also tried arm wrestling for fun and discovered she was very good at it. At just 19 years old, she won her first arm wrestling world championship. She would go on to win 14 more world titles.

College Sports

After high school, Jones went to Modesto Junior College and then Fresno State. She earned a scholarship for her talent in track and field. In college, she played softball and competed in shot put and powerlifting.

She was an All-America athlete in shot put in both junior college and university. In 1983 and 1984, she was the state champion. She even set a national record for junior colleges that lasted from 1983 to 1990. In 1988, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in shot put.

During her sports career, she had 11 knee injuries. After college, she worked as a youth counselor while still competing in sports.

Acting Career

Jones did not plan to be an actress. She was discovered at a bodybuilding competition by Shirley Eson from the TV show American Gladiators. Eson encouraged her to try out for a similar show called Knights and Warriors. Jones got a part as a female warrior on the show.

After Knights and Warriors, she began acting in small roles in movies and TV shows. One of her first recurring roles was on the show Married... with Children. She later played Coach Kelly on the popular kids' show Lizzie McGuire. She has also appeared in shows like Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives, and Prison Break.

Glee

Jones was a big fan of the show Glee. She had worked with one of the show's creators, Ryan Murphy, on other projects. One day, she saw another producer, Brad Falchuk, at a supermarket and asked if she could be on the show.

Soon after, the character of Coach Shannon Beiste was created just for her. She was a guest star for four seasons before becoming a main cast member in the show's final season. Glee also gave her a chance to show her singing talent. She sang several songs on the show, including "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and covers of songs by Taylor Swift and Dolly Parton.
