Dorothy-Marie Jones (born January 4, 1964) is an American actress and a retired athlete. She has appeared in many television shows and movies. Before becoming an actress, she was a very successful athlete.

Dot-Marie Jones went to California State University, Fresno, where she broke records in shot put. She is also an amazing 15-time world champion in arm wrestling. Many people know her for playing Coach Beiste in the popular musical TV series Glee. She was even nominated for an Primetime Emmy Award three times for this role. She also played Coach Kelly in Lizzie McGuire and Butch Brenda in Material Girls.

Early life and sports

Dot-Marie Jones was born on January 4, 1964, and grew up in Hilmar, California. She started getting involved in sports and strength competitions when she was quite young. She began track and field in middle school.

When she was in Hilmar High School, she was a champion weight lifter. She was even named the female athlete of the year. She started arm wrestling just for fun and won her very first world championship when she was only 19 years old. After that, she went on to win 14 more world titles!

After high school, Jones continued her sports journey in college. She attended Modesto Junior College and then Fresno State. She earned a scholarship for track sports, which helped her pay for college. She played softball and competed in shot put and powerlifting.

She was recognized as an All-America athlete in shot put at both her junior college and university. She was the state champion in 1983 and 1984. She also set a national record at the junior college level that lasted from 1983 to 1990. In 1988, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in shot put. She finished sixth in that competition. After college, Jones worked as a youth counselor. She helped young people at the Fresno County Juvenile Probation center while still staying involved with sports.

Acting career

Dot-Marie Jones never planned to be an actress. She was discovered at a bodybuilding competition by Shirley Eson, who was famous from the show American Gladiators. Shirley encouraged Jones to try out for a show called Knights and Warriors. Jones got the part and became one of the few female warriors on the show. She was also offered a chance to become a professional wrestler, but she decided not to because she felt it was "too fakey."

After Knights and Warriors ended, she started getting small roles in TV shows. She appeared in many different series throughout the 1990s and 2000s. She also started acting in movies in the late 1990s, including the film The Boondock Saints. Even while acting, Jones continued to be involved with arm wrestling.

One of Jones's first regular roles was as a character named "Dot" on the popular show Married... with Children in the mid-1990s. She appeared in five episodes. Her next big role was on the kids' show Lizzie McGuire, where she played Coach Kelly. After that, she appeared in other popular shows like Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives, and Prison Break. She worked with Hilary Duff on Lizzie McGuire and later again in the movie Material Girls.

Jones was a big fan of the TV show Glee. She had also worked with one of the show's creators, Ryan Murphy, before. One day, she met the show's co-executive producer, Brad Falchuk, at a supermarket and asked if she could be on the show. Soon after, the character of Coach Shannon Beiste was created especially for her. She was a guest star in seasons two, three, four, and five. For the sixth and final season, she became a main cast member.

Glee allowed her to show off her singing skills. Her first song on the show was "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" with Matthew Morrison, who played Will Schuester. She also recorded songs like Taylor Swift's "Mean" and Dolly Parton's "Jolene".

She has also appeared in other TV shows like Jane the Virgin and Modern Family. In July 2011, Jones appeared on Logo TV's RuPaul's Drag U as a visiting professor.
