Life and Music Career
Growing Up in Brooklyn
Oladipo Omishore grew up in Brooklyn, New York City. His family comes from Nigeria, and they are part of the Yoruba tribe. His parents always supported his love for music.
When he was seven, his dad sent him to the Brooklyn Music School for piano lessons. Even though he preferred playing the guitar, learning piano helped him a lot when he started producing music. He later studied electrical engineering at Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He also played basketball for his university team and graduated in 2008.
Starting in Music Production
Dot da Genius began his journey in music production in 2003. He started by using a program called FL Studio at New York University. In 2004, he set up his own music studio in his basement. His parents helped him buy the equipment for this studio, which he called "Head Banga Muzik Studios."
As his production skills became well-known, he moved his studio to a bigger place called Brewery Recording Studio. In 2009, he teamed up with Andrew Krivonos, who owned Brewery Recording Studio. Together, they moved the studio to a new, larger location in North Brooklyn.
Working with Kid Cudi
Dot da Genius and Kid Cudi met in 2006 and lived together for two years. They quickly became good friends and decided to make music together. Their biggest success was the song "Day N' Nite." Dot da Genius created the beats, and Kid Cudi rapped and sang over them.
He produced "Day N' Nite" in his Head Banga Muzik Studios. He used different ways to mix and create the sounds for the track. The song was finished in just two days in 2007. It became very popular two years later, in 2009. "Day N' Nite" became a top three hit in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It was featured on Kid Cudi's album Man on the Moon: The End of Day.
Forming the Band WZRD
In 2010, Dot da Genius and Kid Cudi formed an alternative rock band called WZRD. Kid Cudi handles the singing, while Dot da Genius is in charge of all the music production.
Their self-titled album, WZRD, was released in February 2012. They found inspiration for their music from bands like Nirvana, The Pixies, and Pink Floyd. They recorded much of the album while traveling on their tour bus or in Kid Cudi's studio in Hollywood Hills. The album sold well and reached number three on the album sales chart.
