River Facts: The Drôme's Journey
The Drôme river is about 110.7 km (68.8 mi) long. That's like driving from one end of a big city to another! The area of land that drains water into the Drôme river is called its drainage basin. This basin covers about 1,663 km2 (642 sq mi) of land.
How Much Water Flows in the Drôme?
The amount of water flowing in the Drôme river changes throughout the year. On average, about 17.2 m3/s (610 cu ft/s) of water flows past a point near Saillans every second. This measurement is called the river's discharge.

Average monthly discharge (m3/s) at Saillans (108 years)
Where Does the Drôme River Start and End?
The Drôme river begins high up in the mountains. Its source is in a place called the Col de Carabès. This is in the western part of the Alps mountains. It starts in a small area called a commune (which is like a local town or district) named La Bâtie-des-Fonds. The river starts at an altitude (height above sea level) of about 1,033 m (3,389 ft).
From its start, the Drôme river first flows towards the northwest. Then, it turns and flows mostly to the west.
The Drôme river flows through the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. It passes through two different departments and many communes. Some of the towns it flows through include:
- In the Drôme department: Valdrôme, Luc-en-Diois, Die, Saillans, Allex, Crest, Loriol-sur-Drôme, Livron-sur-Drôme
- In the Ardèche department: Le Pouzin (where it joins the Rhône)
Finally, the Drôme river meets the larger Rhône river. This meeting point is called a confluence. It happens near the commune of Loriol-sur-Drôme. This spot is right on the border with the Ardèche department.
