The Dracula film series is a collection of exciting British horror movies. These films were made by Hammer Film Productions. They tell the story of the famous Count Dracula, a powerful vampire. Dracula tries to spread his vampiric influence, turning others into creatures of the night. The brave Van Helsing family always steps in to try and stop him.

This series includes nine films. The legendary actor Christopher Lee plays Count Dracula in most of them. Another famous actor, Peter Cushing, often plays a member of the heroic Van Helsing family. He appears as Abraham Van Helsing in the first, second, and ninth films. He also plays Lawrence and Lorrimer Van Helsing in later movies.

The Legacy of Dracula Films

As Count Dracula, Christopher Lee created a lasting image of the fanged vampire. This image became very popular in movies and stories. Dracula introduced many classic vampire elements. These included fangs, red contact lenses, and wooden stakes. The opening credits even showed blood splattering over Dracula's coffin.

Lee also made the character of Dracula powerful and captivating. He showed Dracula as a strong and memorable villain. This portrayal helped make Dracula one of the greatest horror movie characters ever.

The Anno Dracula book series also connects to these films. Author Kim Newman mentioned using elements from the Hammer Dracula films. For example, one book imagined a different ending for the 1958 Dracula movie. The fourth book in the series, Johnny Alucard, features a character first seen in Dracula A.D. 1972.

In 2017, Time Out magazine conducted a poll. Many actors, directors, and writers voted Dracula as the 65th-best British film ever. Empire magazine also ranked Christopher Lee's Dracula as the 7th-greatest horror movie character of all time.
