Dreamland Bar-B-Que is a popular barbecue restaurant chain. It is well-known for its delicious ribs and special barbecue sauce. The first Dreamland restaurant was started in 1958 by "Big Daddy" John Bishop. It opened in the Jerusalem Heights area of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Since then, Dreamland Bar-B-Que has grown a lot. It has opened many new restaurants in different cities. These include Birmingham, Montgomery, Huntsville, Mobile, and Northport in Alabama. There are also two locations near Atlanta, Georgia, in Roswell and Duluth. In May 2016, Dreamland Bar-B-Que opened its first restaurant in Florida. This location is in Tallahassee.
Why Dreamland Bar-B-Que is Famous
Dreamland Bar-B-Que has received many compliments over the years. The original restaurant in Tuscaloosa is very famous. In 2014, USA Today called it "the most famous rib joint in the east." They also said it was "a true legend."
Business Insider once ranked the Tuscaloosa location highly. It was number 13 out of 365 barbecue restaurants across 48 states. The University of Georgia's athletic department even tweeted about it. They called it "a tasty Crimson Tide tradition."
Other magazines and newspapers have also praised Dreamland. Southern Living listed it as one of "The South's Best BBQ Joints" in 2019. A writer from AJC said, "Ain’t nothing like ‘em nowhere." In 2006, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution put Dreamland at number 3 for "the best eateries around the SEC."
In May 2008, Details Magazine named Dreamland as having the best barbecue you could order by mail. When the Florida location opened, the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper wrote about its "hickory-grilled ribs, tender pork, chicken and sides." They also told readers to bring lots of napkins! Dreamland BBQ is even mentioned in a song by Mojo Nixon called UFO's, Big Rigs, and BBQ.
In 2019, "Big Daddy" John Bishop, who started Dreamland Bar-B-Que, was honored. He was added to the Barbecue Hall of Fame after he had passed away. This shows how important his work was to the world of barbecue.
