Political Journey
Starting in Opposition (2012–2020)
Dritan Abazović helped start a political party called Positive Montenegro in 2012. In the 2012 Montenegrin parliamentary election, his party won seats in the parliament. This made Abazović the youngest member of the Parliament of Montenegro at that time.
In 2014, he left Positive Montenegro and became an independent member of parliament. In 2015, he joined a new party called United Reform Action (URA). He became the president of URA and served as one of its representatives in parliament until 2020.
In 2020, the Civic Movement URA joined the European Green Party. This was a big step for an opposition party in Montenegro. For the 2020 Montenegrin parliamentary election, URA ran independently with a platform called In Black and White. Abazović led this list.
The 2020 elections were historic because they led to the first democratic change of government in Montenegro's history. Abazović's list won four seats, which were very important in ending the 30-year rule of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS). Abazović and other party leaders agreed to form a new government focused on joining the European Union, fighting corruption, and bringing people together.
Deputy Prime Minister (2020–2022)

On 4 December 2020, a new government was formed in Montenegro. Zdravko Krivokapić became the new Prime Minister, and Dritan Abazović was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister. His role involved coordinating security and national safety. This new government aimed to fight corruption and organized crime.
In January 2022, Abazović also became a member of an advisory board for an institute focused on religious freedom and security in Europe.
During his time as Deputy Prime Minister, there were some disagreements within the government. These issues eventually led to the government being voted out of power several months later.
Becoming Prime Minister (2022–2023)

After the previous government lost a vote of no confidence, President Milo Đukanović asked Abazović to form a new government. On 28 April 2022, Montenegro's parliament approved a new government with Dritan Abazović as Prime Minister. This government was a mix of different parties.
Abazović told lawmakers that his government would focus on reforms needed to join the European Union faster. He also said that fighting corruption, encouraging sustainable investments, protecting the environment, and caring for children and young people would be top priorities.
On 20 August 2022, the Parliament of Montenegro passed another vote of no confidence, which ended Abazović's time as Prime Minister. He continued to serve as a caretaker prime minister until a new government was formed.
Personal Life
Dritan Abazović is an ethnic Albanian and a Muslim. He speaks Albanian, Serbo-Croatian, and English. In 2017, he signed a declaration about the common language used by Montenegrins, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks.
