He is an ethnic Albanian and leads the United Reform Action political party. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was the deputy prime minister from 2020 to 2022.

Dritan Abazović is important because he was the first ethnic Albanian and the first Muslim to become Prime Minister of Montenegro.

Dritan Abazović was born in Ulcinj, Montenegro, on 25 December 1985. He is from the Albanian ethnic group. He went to elementary and high school in Ulcinj.

He studied at the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Sarajevo. He was a top student there, earning special awards. Political Career

Becoming a Member of Parliament (2012–2020)

Dritan Abazović helped start a political party called Positive Montenegro in 2012. In the 2012 Montenegrin parliamentary election, his party won 7 out of 81 seats in the Parliament of Montenegro. This made him the youngest member of parliament at that time.

In 2014, he left Positive Montenegro and became an independent member of parliament. In 2015, he joined a new party called United Reform Action (URA). He is now the leader of URA. He served as a representative for URA in parliament from 2015 to 2020.

In 2020, the Civic Movement URA became the first opposition party in Montenegro to join a group of European parties called the European Green Party.

For the 2020 Montenegrin parliamentary election, URA decided to run on its own. Their election platform was called "In Black and White." Dritan Abazović led this list. The election was historic because it led to the first democratic change of government in Montenegro's history. Abazović's party won four seats, which were very important in ending the 30-year rule of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS).

After the election, Abazović and the leaders of two other political lists agreed on some key goals for the new government. These goals included forming a government of experts, continuing the process for Montenegro to join the European Union, and working to reduce corruption.

Serving as Deputy Prime Minister (2020–2022)

On 4 December 2020, a new government was formed in Montenegro. Zdravko Krivokapić became the new Prime Minister of Montenegro, and Dritan Abazović became the Deputy Prime Minister. In this role, he was in charge of coordinating security and national safety. This marked the end of three decades of rule by the DPS party. The new government aimed to fight corruption and organized crime.

In January 2022, Abazović also became a member of an advisory board for an organization focused on freedom of faith and security in Europe.

Becoming Prime Minister (2022–2023)

On 3 March 2022, President Đukanović asked Abazović to form a new government. This happened after the previous government led by Krivokapić lost a vote of no confidence. On 28 April, Montenegro's parliament approved a new government with Abazović as prime minister. This government was made up of many different parties.

As Prime Minister, Abazović told lawmakers that his government would focus on reforms needed for Montenegro to join the European Union. He also said that fighting corruption, encouraging sustainable investments, protecting the environment, and taking better care of children and young people would be top priorities.

However, on 20 August 2022, the Parliament of Montenegro voted against Abazović's government. This vote ended his time as prime minister. He continued to serve as a caretaker prime minister until a new government could be formed.

Personal Life

Dritan Abazović is an ethnic Albanian and follows Islam. He speaks his native Albanian, as well as Serbo-Croatian and English. In 2017, he signed an important document called the Declaration on the Common Language, which is about the shared language among Montenegrins, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks.
