Dugdemona River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Dugdemona River (say it like dug-duh-mona) is a cool river in north-central Louisiana, a state in the United States. It's about 129 miles (208 km) long. The Dugdemona is a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. We call this a 'tributary'. It flows into the Little River.

This river is part of a huge water system. All the water from the Dugdemona eventually flows into the Little River, then the Ouachita River, and finally the Red River. From there, it joins the mighty Mississippi River. This whole area where water collects and flows into a main river is called a 'watershed' or 'drainage basin'.

Where the Dugdemona River Flows

The Dugdemona River starts in western Lincoln Parish, near a town called Simsboro. From there, it generally flows towards the southeast.

As it travels, the river passes through several different parishes (which are like counties in Louisiana). These include Bienville, Jackson, Winn, and Grant parishes.

The river also flows through a part of the Kisatchie National Forest. This is a large protected forest area. The Dugdemona River joins another stream called Castor Creek. Together, they form the Little River. This meeting point is about 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Georgetown.

The Little Dugdemona River

There's also a smaller stream connected to the main river. It's known as the Little Dugdemona River. This smaller tributary flows southwestwardly. It passes through Jackson and Bienville parishes.

River Flow and Water Levels

The amount of water flowing in a river can change. At a place called Joyce, LA, experts measure how much water moves through the Dugdemona River. On average, throughout the year, about 835 cubic feet (23.6 cubic meters) of water flow past this point every second. This measurement is called the 'mean annual discharge'. It helps us understand how much water the river carries.
