The Duke of Clarence and Avondale was a special title given to Prince Albert Victor. He was the grandson of Queen Victoria, a famous British queen. This title was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is a system of noble ranks like dukes, marquesses, and earls.
The name 'Clarence' probably comes from a place called Clare in Suffolk, England. 'Avondale' refers to a beautiful valley in Scotland, called the Avon Water.
Prince Albert Victor was the first and only person to hold the title of Duke of Clarence and Avondale. He was the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VII. This was the last time a royal dukedom was created with two different place names in its title.
Sadly, the Duke died in 1892 from pneumonia. He passed away before he could get married, so the title ended with him. He is buried in the Albert Memorial Chapel, which is next to St George's Chapel, Windsor. His memorial was designed by Sir Alfred Gilbert.
Who Was Prince Albert Victor?
