Dulles Town Center is a special area in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a place the government counts for population, but it's not an official city or town.
It is located about 7 miles (11 km) north of Washington Dulles International Airport. The area is named after the big Dulles Town Center shopping mall found there. The United States Postal Service considers Dulles Town Center part of Dulles, Virginia. Dulles itself is part of Sterling, Virginia. In 2010, about 4,601 people lived in Dulles Town Center.
How Dulles Town Center Began
In December 1987, officials in Loudoun County approved plans for a large shopping mall. This was going to be the first big mall in the area. It was first called "Windmill Regional Shopping Center."
Later, in 1988, its name changed to "Dulles Town Center." The mall was supposed to open in 1993. A company called Lerner Enterprises was in charge of building it.
The project was put on hold for a few years. This happened because the local economy was not doing well. In March 1994, they announced construction would start again. They hoped to open the mall by 1996.
However, there were more delays. Construction finally began in the summer of 1996. The first two main stores, Hecht's and Lord & Taylor, opened on November 18, 1998. The official grand opening ceremony for Dulles Town Center was held on August 12, 1999.
