Cascades is a special type of community in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but doesn't have its own official city government. In 2010, about 11,912 people lived in Cascades. It's considered one of the main parts of the Potomac Falls community, along with nearby Countryside and Lowes Island.

Exploring the Cascades Community

Cascades is a carefully planned community that covers about 2,500 acres. It has around 6,500 homes. The community was officially started in 1990. Before Cascades was built, this area was mostly made up of large farms.

What the Homeowners Association Does

A group called the homeowners association (HOA) helps manage the community. They take care of five community centers and five swimming pools. They also maintain 15 tennis courts and many paved walking trails for everyone to enjoy.

Lowes Island at Cascades

The area known as Lowes Island at Cascades is part of the larger Cascades community. It is centered around the Trump National Golf Club Washington, D.C.. This golf club used to be called Lowes Island Country Club.

The Potomac River Connection

The northern edge of the Cascades community is bordered by the Potomack Lake Sportsplex and Algonkian Regional Park. Both of these places are included in the Cascades CDP. The name "Cascades" comes from how the Potomac River flows quickly downhill, starting near Lowes Island and leading to the famous Great Falls.

Places to Visit in Cascades

The main shopping area in Cascades is called Cascades Marketplace. It's a large shopping center with many stores. Right next to it is the Cascades Public Library. The Loudoun campus of Northern Virginia Community College is also very close by. Another smaller shopping area, Great Falls Plaza, is located near Lowes Island.

Local Schools and Services

Students in Cascades attend several public schools. These include Potomac Falls High School, River Bend Middle School, Potowmack Elementary School, Horizon Elementary School, and Lowes Island Elementary School. The community is also home to Falcons Landing, a special retirement community for retired U.S. military officers. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office helps keep the community safe. The Sterling Volunteer Fire Department provides fire and rescue services. The Potomac Falls post office handles mail for the area.

Neighboring Communities

The Potomack Lakes Sportsplex and Algonkian Regional Park are located north of the main Cascades development. However, they are still part of the Cascades CDP. The northern border of the CDP is the Potomac River.
