Dun Deal's Early Music Journey
Dun Deal started his music career in 2003. He formed a group called O Boys with his high school friends. They even got a deal with a record company called Ruff Ryders. Dun Deal used the money he earned to buy studio equipment. He began learning how to create music beats. By 2005, he had shifted from rapping to focusing on producing music. His first big production job was for one of Tyler Perry's movies.
Around 2007, Dun Deal started making music for other artists. Some of these artists were Rich Kidz, Future, and Young Thug. He had his own music studio in downtown Atlanta. He also worked with a music production team called Planet 9.
In 2012, Dun Deal joined DJ Spinz's production team. This team was called Hoodrich Production Group (HPG). Other producers like C4 and Childish Major were also part of HPG. Dun Deal joined them while he was producing music for Rich Kidz's album Everybody Eat Bread.
How "Hannah Montana" Became a Hit
In 2013, Dun Deal became widely known for producing Migos' popular song "Hannah Montana". He had created the beat for the song about two years earlier. DJ Spinz was in a recording session with Migos. He asked Dun Deal for some instrumentals. Dun Deal sent the beat, and Migos recorded the song in about 30 minutes. Dun Deal was not sure about the song's title at first. However, the song quickly became a big hit.
In October 2013, Complex magazine featured Dun Deal. They put him on their list of "25 New Producers To Watch For". The magazine said his beats were very important to the albums he worked on. They also noted his ability to create different types of music. In January 2014, FACT magazine also recognized Dun Deal and his HPG team. They were listed among "10 hip-hop producers to watch in 2014". FACT said their sound helped define music in 2013.
On April 30, 2014, Dun Deal released a music project with rapper Rome Fortune. It was an EP (Extended Play) called Drive, Thighs & Lies. Dun Deal also worked on a mixtape called BASS (Below a Silver Sky). It was planned for release in 2014.
That same year, he signed two young producers, Isaac Flame and Goose. They produced nine tracks for the mixtape Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1. In 2015, Dun Deal partnered with P.Kaldone, who leads MafiaSoul Records LLC. Together, they opened a studio in Atlanta. They worked with famous producer Bangladesh. They also helped develop young artists like Ray Moon, Kellz, and Arius. Arius released her first EP, "Pandora's Box," in 2017.
Dun Deal's Music Style
Gabriel Herrera from Vice described Dun Deal as a key person behind many big hits. These hits were popular on mixtapes and on the radio. Dun Deal talked about how his music has grown. He said he felt like something was missing when he first started. But by making music every day, he found the right way to create songs that could be played on the radio.
Dun Deal uses Logic Studio to make his music. Sometimes, he also plays real instruments like a guitar, a grand piano, and drums. Like many hip-hop producers, Dun Deal adds a special sound to his music. It is the phrase "Dun Deal on the Track," spoken with a higher-pitched voice. This sound was first recorded by Skool Boy from the Rich Kidz.
