Early Life and Beginnings
Hill grew up in Augusta, Georgia. His grandmother and uncle owned a supper club, and he knew the DJ there from a very young age. Watching the DJ work inspired him.
When he was 14, his mother bought him his first set of turntables. He made a good impression on the program director at a local radio station in Augusta. Soon, he was DJing during the commercial breaks of high school football games.
At 16, he got his own radio show. While other kids wanted to be basketball players or rappers, he loved being a DJ and controlling the crowd's energy. At 18, Hill moved from Augusta to pursue his dream.
Music Career
After moving to Atlanta, DJ Spinz met another DJ named DJ Scream. They worked together at Sirius XM Radio. DJ Scream helped him get known in the Atlanta music scene. This led to a job at a club, where he met many up-and-coming artists.
In 2009, he got a spot on Atlanta's popular radio station, Hot 107.9. Around this time, he became interested in making his own music. He bought a keyboard and started learning how to produce.
In 2010, he produced the hit song "Go Shorty, Go" for the group Travis Porter. The song's success made him want to focus more on production. In 2011, he produced "Riot" for 2 Chainz and "Cashin' Out" for Cash Out. His productions often feature a sound clip of his little brother saying, "Cut it up!"
The Famous Spinz 808 Sound
The DJ Spinz 808 is a special bass drum sound named after him. It's a type of sound from a Roland TR-808 drum machine that he changed to make it unique. This sound is now one of the most popular and recognizable sounds in trap music.
He created the sound in 2011. Music producers loved it because it had a deep, powerful bass and a strong punch. Many producers have made their own versions of it. The "Spinz 808" is often used as the main bass sound in trap songs.
Many famous producers like Metro Boomin and 808 Mafia have used the Spinz 808. It was even the bass sound in the huge 2019 hit song "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X. That song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a record-breaking 19 weeks.
