Starrah's Early Life and Music Journey
Starrah grew up in Delaware as the youngest of nine children. She has shared that she experienced a challenging childhood. Her talent for songwriting started from writing short stories and poems. She attended Delaware State University. After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles to start her music career.
She began by sharing her music on SoundCloud and selling small music samples on Instagram. An industry manager noticed her work and helped her connect with other songwriters. This led to her co-writing "Be Real" for Kid Ink in 2015. This song reached number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2016, Starrah wrote several songs that became big hits. "2 Phones" by Kevin Gates sold over two million copies. Rihanna's song "Needed Me" reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for a long time.
On September 22, 2017, Starrah released a joint music project, an EP, with producer Diplo. It was called Starrah x Diplo. In April 2019, Starrah partnered with Hipgnosis Songs Fund. She also worked closely with Madonna on six songs for Madonna's 2019 album, Madame X. Starrah released her first single, "How It Goes," on August 12, 2020.
How Starrah Creates Music
Starrah has explained her unique way of creating songs. She usually writes the lyrics first. After the words are ready, she then finds a melody and music production that fit the lyrics. In her early career, some people thought her style was "too urban." However, she later found great success by blending her urban sound with mainstream pop music.
