Life and Music Career
Rome Fortune was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a musical family. He is related to famous jazz musicians like cornetist Nat Adderley and saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. He started rapping when he was in high school. He changed his name from Jerome because he felt "Rome" was a better fit for his music career.
One of the biggest influences in Fortune's life was his grandfather, a jazz musician named Richard Adderley. His grandfather helped produce the Beautiful ... II EP and played the vibraphone on it. He also appeared in the music video for the song "OneDay."
In 2013, the music website Pitchfork called Beautiful ... one of the best mixtapes of the year that many people had missed. The next year, in the summer of 2014, Fortune toured across the U.S. and the U.K. with the British indie-rock band Glass Animals.
For a while, Fortune released music without being signed to a major record label. In late 2015, he signed with Fool's Gold Records. He released his first album, Jerome Raheem Fortune, in 2016. In the summer of 2024, he signed with a new label, Fogwood Records.
Musical Style and Influences
Fortune has said that he is influenced by rap music from the 1990s, especially the rapper DMX. He also gets a lot of ideas from jazz music. He believes that jazz and hip-hop are very similar.
Fortune's music often mixes different styles of hip hop. For example, on his Beautiful ... mixtape, he blended elements of trap music with other sounds. He also explored electronic music on his Small VVorld EP, working with the British electronic artist Four Tet.
