Dundee is a small village located in Yates County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,690 people lived here. The village got its name from Dundee, a city in Scotland.

Dundee village is part of the Town of Starkey. It is found in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York. The village is about halfway between the cities of Elmira and Geneva. There is also a small airport, Dundee Airport (D48), located just northeast of the village.

Village History

The area where Dundee is now was first called "Plainview". At first, the village struggled to grow. This was because of a nearby town called "Eddytown". But over time, Dundee became more successful than its rival.

Around 1834, people living in the village wanted a new name. A resident named James Gifford, who was from Scotland, suggested naming it "Dundee". This is how the village got its current name.

Dundee faced some tough times in the mid-1800s. Big fires caused a lot of damage in 1859, 1860, and 1861.

The company Seneca Foods first started in Dundee.

Several important buildings and areas in Dundee are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Uriah Hair House, the Dundee Methodist Church, the First Presbyterian Church, and the Dundee Village Historic District. These places are recognized for their historical value.

Geography of Dundee

Dundee is located at coordinates 42°31′28″N 76°58′29″W / 42.52444°N 76.97472°W / 42.52444; -76.97472. The village covers a total area of about 1.1 square miles (2.85 square kilometers), and all of it is land.

Seneca Lake, one of the famous Finger Lakes, is only four miles east of Dundee. A stream called Big Stream flows through the village. This stream is also known for good fishing during certain times of the year.

Dundee is located along New York State Route 14A, which is a main highway running north and south. Another road, New York State Route 230, ends at NY-14A just west of Dundee.
