Mountain History
Dunderberg Peak has an interesting story behind its name. It was not always called Dunderberg Peak. Long ago, this mountain was known as Castle Peak.
In 1878, a group of explorers from the Wheeler Survey came to the area. The Wheeler Survey was a team that mapped and studied the land in the western United States. They decided to rename the mountain. They called it Dunderberg Peak after some mines that were located on its northern side.
