Durong is a small country area, also known as a locality, in Queensland, Australia. It is part of the South Burnett Region. In 2021, about 219 people called Durong home. It's a quiet place with a strong community feel.

Where is Durong Located?

Durong is a rural area, meaning it's mostly countryside. Two main roads cross through Durong. The Chinchilla – Wondai Road goes from the southwest to the east. The Mundubbera–Durong Road comes from the north and meets the Chinchilla – Wondai Road.

There's a smaller area within Durong called Durong South. It's a neighbourhood right in the middle of the locality.

Durong has a history of building community places and schools. These places helped the area grow over the years.

Early Schools in Durong

  • Durong Provisional School first opened its doors on 3 September 1923.
  • It became Durong State School on 7 November 1927.
  • The school closed for a short time in 1928 because not enough students were attending.
  • Later, in 1970, it was renamed Boondooma State School. This happened after Boondooma State School closed in 1968.
  • The school closed for good in December 1999. It was located on Mundubbera Durong Road in the nearby area of Boondooma.
  • Durong South State School opened a bit later, on 24 May 1925.

Community Buildings and Churches

  • The Durong Public Hall opened on 14 April 1934. It was much bigger than the old hall.
  • The Durong Baptist Church officially opened on 4-5 August 1934.
  • The Sacred Heart Catholic Church opened on 6 March 1966. It was built on land given by Mr and Mrs Graham Stuart Bond. This church closed in 2022.
  • The Durong library started in 1991, giving local people access to books and information.
