Dwayne John Bravo (born 7 October 1983) is a retired cricketer from Trinidad and Tobago. He used to be the captain of the West Indies cricket team. He is currently a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He also worked as a bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings and a bowling consultant for the Afghanistan national cricket team.

Bravo was known as a right-arm medium-fast all-rounder. This means he was good at both batting and bowling. He was especially famous for his powerful batting in the last overs of a game and his clever bowling, often called "death bowling," in Twenty20 (T20) cricket. He is also a singer!

From 2004 to 2021, Bravo played many international matches for the West Indies. He played 40 Test matches, 164 One Day Internationals, and 91 Twenty20 Internationals. He was a key player when the West Indies won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, and the 2016 ICC World Twenty20. He even caught the winning ball in the 2012 T20 World Cup Final! He first retired from international cricket in 2018 but came back in 2019 for the 2020 T20 World Cup.

In local cricket, Bravo played for his home team, Trinidad and Tobago, starting in 2002. He also played for many other teams in leagues around the world until he fully retired in September 2024.

Dwayne Bravo's Cricket Journey

Early Days in Cricket

Dwayne Bravo started his first-class career in 2002 for Trinidad and Tobago. In his first match, he batted but didn't bowl much. A month later, he scored his first century (100 runs in one innings). He also showed his skills as an all-rounder by taking 6 wickets for only 11 runs in a match against the Windward Islands.

Playing for West Indies

Bravo made his One Day International debut in 2004 against England. He didn't bat in that game but took 2 wickets. Later that year, he played his first Test match against England at Lord's. He scored runs and took 3 wickets. In that Test series, he took 16 wickets and scored 220 runs. His best bowling in Test cricket was 6 wickets for 55 runs.

Overcoming Injuries

In 2005, during a tour in Australia, Bravo scored an amazing 113 runs in a difficult situation. This helped his team play better. In 2006, he got a side strain injury in New Zealand. Even though he couldn't bowl, he still played in all three Test matches as a specialist batsman. This showed how important he had become to the West Indies team.

Strong Comeback in 2006

After some tough matches in India, Bravo played very well in the ICC Champions Trophy 2006. He took 7 wickets and scored 164 runs. He made his first ever ODI century, scoring 112 runs not out against England. He was known for his tricky slower balls, which helped him get important wickets.

In 2007, during a Test match against England, Bravo even filled in as a wicket-keeper for a short time. He also took a famous wicket by bowling a fast ball that hit the batsman's helmet, knocking it onto the stumps!

World Cup Appearances

Bravo played in several Cricket World Cups.

  • In the 2007 Cricket World Cup, he took 13 wickets but had a high economy rate.
  • He was part of the West Indies team that won the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. He mostly played as a batsman due to an injury.
  • In 2014, he was not chosen for the 2015 Cricket World Cup squad. The West Indies team struggled without him, especially with their bowling.
  • He played a big role when the West Indies won the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India. His excellent "death bowling" (bowling in the final overs) was a main reason for their victory.

Retirement and Return to Cricket

In 2015, Bravo announced he was retiring from Test cricket. In 2018, he said he was retiring from all international cricket. However, he decided to come back in 2019 to prepare for the 2020 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

In 2021, he was part of the West Indies team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. On November 6, 2021, he played his last international T20 match against Australia. He continued to play in different leagues around the world and finally retired from all forms of cricket on September 27, 2024.

After Chennai Super Kings were suspended for two years, he played for Gujarat Lions. He returned to Chennai Super Kings in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, he had a groin injury that kept him out of some matches.

In 2022, Chennai Super Kings bought him again. On December 2, 2022, he retired from playing in the IPL. He then became the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings. In 2025, he will become a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
