Dwayne John "DJ" Bravo (born 7 October 1983) is a famous retired cricketer from Trinidad and Tobago. He was a key player for the West Indies cricket team. Dwayne was known as an all-rounder, meaning he was great at both batting and bowling.

He was especially good at batting powerfully in the last parts of a game. He also had special bowling skills, often called a "death bowler" in T20 cricket. After retiring from playing, he became a coach. He worked as a bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings and a consultant for the Afghanistan team. As of July 2025, he is part of the coaching staff for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Dwayne Bravo is also a singer!

Between 2004 and 2021, Bravo played many international matches for the West Indies. He played in 40 Test matches, 164 ODI matches, and 91 T20I matches. He helped the West Indies win major tournaments. These included the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, and the 2016 ICC World Twenty20. He even caught the winning ball in the 2012 T20 World Cup.

He first retired from international cricket in 2018. But he came back in 2019 to prepare for the 2020 T20 World Cup. In domestic cricket, Bravo played for his home team, Trinidad and Tobago, starting in 2002. He also played for many other teams around the world until he fully retired from all cricket in September 2024.

Early Cricket Days

Dwayne Bravo started his professional cricket journey in 2002. He made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago. In his first game, he batted but did not bowl.

A month later, he scored his first century (100 runs) in first-class cricket. He then joined the West Indies A team for their tour of England. In 2003, he showed his skills as an all-rounder. He scored another century and took an amazing 6 wickets for only 11 runs in one game.

Playing for West Indies

Bravo made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 2004 against England. He took two wickets in that match. Later that year, he played his first Test match against England at Lord's. He scored runs and took three wickets in that game.

He had a great Test series against England, taking 16 wickets and scoring 220 runs. His best bowling performance in Test cricket was 6 wickets for 55 runs. This happened at Old Trafford.

Overcoming Injuries

In 2005, during a tour of Australia, Bravo scored a fantastic 113 runs in a difficult situation. This helped his team regain confidence. In the final match of that series, he bowled brilliantly, taking 6 wickets for 84 runs.

In early 2006, Bravo got an injury during a tour of New Zealand. He could not bowl but still played in all three Test matches as a batsman. This showed how important he had become to the West Indies team.

Strong Comeback in 2006

After a tough series in India, Bravo returned to top form in the ICC Champions Trophy 2006. He took 7 wickets and scored 164 runs. He made his first ever ODI century in a match against England, scoring 112 runs without being out.

His bowling was very effective, especially his slower balls. In a Test match against England in 2007, he even acted as a temporary wicket-keeper. He also took a memorable wicket by hitting the batsman's helmet, which then knocked the bails off the stumps.

World Cup Appearances

Bravo played in all West Indies games at the 2007 Cricket World Cup. He took 13 wickets in the tournament. He was also part of the West Indies team for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. ESPNcricinfo named him in the 'Team of the Tournament' for his great performance.

He missed the 2011 Cricket World Cup due to a knee injury. He slipped while bowling and had to rest for four weeks. However, he played a big role in the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, which the West Indies won. Even with an injury, he played mostly as a batsman. ESPNcricinfo also named him in the T20I Team of the Year for 2012.

In 2014, Bravo was a spokesperson for players during a strike. This led to a tour of India being cancelled. He was later not chosen for the 2015 Cricket World Cup. The West Indies team struggled without him, especially with their bowling.

He then played in all West Indies games at the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India. The West Indies won this tournament too! His excellent "death bowling" (bowling in the final overs) was a key reason for their victory. Cricbuzz named him in the 'Team of the Tournament'. In May 2019, he was named as a reserve player for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Retirement and Return

On January 31, 2015, Bravo announced he was retiring from Test cricket. In October 2018, he said he would retire from all international cricket. However, he continued to play in T20 leagues around the world.

In December 2019, Bravo decided to come out of international retirement. He wanted to play in the 2020 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. In September 2021, he was chosen for the West Indies squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

On November 6, 2021, Bravo officially retired from international cricket. His last T20I match was against Australia. He kept playing in various cricket leagues globally. Finally, on September 27, 2024, he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
