How ECCO Started
ECCO was founded in 1963 by Karl Toosbuy. He started the company in the small town of Bredebro, Denmark. His goal was to create comfortable and stylish shoes.
Growing Around the World
In the 1980s, ECCO began to grow internationally. By 1982, they were selling 1 million pairs of shoes each year! To keep up with this demand, they started making shoes in Portugal. They also licensed production in Japan and Cyprus.
In 1996, ECCO built its own research and design center in Denmark. It was called "Futura." Since 2009, their main research center has been in Portugal. ECCO also opened its own leather processing facilities in Indonesia and Thailand.
Taking Control of Production
In 1998, ECCO opened its first big retail store. This store was on Oxford Street in London. By the year 2000, ECCO managed every part of making their products. This included designing shoes, producing leather, and selling items in their own stores.
How ECCO Makes Products
ECCO owns several tanneries. These are places where animal hides are turned into leather. Their tanneries are located in the Netherlands, Thailand, Indonesia, and China.
ECCO's tanneries are important suppliers of leather. They provide leather for the fashion, sports, and car industries. ECCO also works to make the leather tanning process more environmentally friendly.
Most of ECCO's shoes, about 98%, are made in their own factories. These factories are in Portugal, Slovakia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and China. Some shoes are also made under license in India.
ECCO Around the World
ECCO shoes and leather goods are sold in 101 countries. The company has expanded its business into many markets. These include countries in Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, Canada, South America, and the United States.
You can buy ECCO products in over 6,250 ECCO-branded stores. They are also sold by independent retailers and through online shops.
