East Allegheny, also known as Deutschtown, is a vibrant neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is located on the city's North Side. This area has a ZIP Code of 15212. A local council member represents the neighborhood in the Pittsburgh City Council. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire also has a station in Deutschtown.

Discovering Deutschtown's Past

In 1783, the state of Pennsylvania set aside a large piece of land. This land was north of where the Allegheny River meets the Ohio River. A plan for Allegheny City was created the next year. It included 36 city blocks. These blocks were surrounded by a common area for grazing animals.

How East Allegheny Began

The grazing area later became a park called Allegheny Commons. The land just east of this park was meant for farming. This farming area is what we now call East Allegheny.

German Roots and a New Name

Between 1850 and 1900, many German immigrants moved here. They built homes and businesses. Because of them, the area became known as Dutchtown. This was a common way to say Deutschtown, which means "German town" in German. The residents built strong homes and businesses. They created a busy shopping area on East Ohio Street. Their homes were mostly south of this street.

A Historic Neighborhood

In 1984, Deutschtown was recognized as a special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means its history and buildings are important to protect. The neighborhood is also a City of Pittsburgh Historic District. This shows its unique character and strong community feeling.

Changes and Community Spirit

Later, the construction of Interstate 279 cut the neighborhood in half. This created West Deutschtown and East Deutschtown. The highway caused some challenges for the area. Some people moved away, and homes were rented out. However, local people formed the East Allegheny Community Council. They worked hard to bring the neighborhood back to life. They especially focused on the western part.

East Allegheny is divided into two main parts. "East Deutschtown" is bordered by East Street, East Ohio Street, Goehring Street, and Vinial Streets. "West Deutschtown" stretches from Cedar Avenue to East Street. It runs from the Norfolk Southern Mainline to Dunloe Street.
