East Union is a small, quiet community in Carver County, Minnesota, in the United States. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county and townships around it.

You can find East Union right where Dahlgren Township and San Francisco Township meet. It's usually thought of as being around the spot where three county roads – County Road 40, County Road 43, and County Road 50 – all come together. Nearby places include the towns of Chaska, Carver, and Cologne. A stream called Bevens Creek also flows through this community.

History of East Union

The story of East Union began in 1854 when people from Sweden came to settle here. They traveled by flatboat up the nearby Minnesota River to reach this area. These early settlers created a place they called King Oscar's Settlement.

Over time, this settlement grew and eventually split into two church areas, known as East Union and West Union. The East Union Lutheran Church and its community hall are very old and important. They are even listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of King Oscar's Settlement. West Union became a separate church area about 9 miles (14 km) to the west. This made it easier for people living further away to attend church without traveling so far.

Something else important happened in East Union in 1862: Gustavus Adolphus College was founded here! This college is now a much bigger school located in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Notable Person from East Union

  • Andrew Holt, who became a justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court, was born right here in East Union. He was an important legal figure in the state.
