Ebenezer Dumont (born November 23, 1814 – died April 16, 1871) was an important person from Indiana. He served as a U.S. Representative for his state. He was also a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Life Story of Ebenezer Dumont
Ebenezer Dumont was born in Vevay, Indiana. His father, John Dumont, was involved in Indiana politics. His mother, Julia Louisa Dumont, was a well-known teacher and writer.
Early Life and Education
Ebenezer went to Hanover College where he studied classical subjects. After college, he studied law. He became a lawyer and started his practice in Vevay.
Early Political and Military Career
Dumont began his political career early. In 1838, he served in the Indiana House of Representatives. From 1839 to 1845, he was the treasurer of Vevay.
He also joined the military. During the Mexican–American War, he served as a lieutenant colonel. He was part of the 4th Indiana Infantry Regiment.
After the war, Dumont returned to Indiana. He continued his law practice. He also served again in the State house of representatives in 1850 and 1853.
Service in the Civil War
When the American Civil War began, Ebenezer Dumont joined the Union Army. Governor Oliver P. Morton made him a colonel. He led the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
His regiment first saw action in western Virginia. Later, they fought mostly in the Western Theater of the war. Dumont was promoted to brigadier general on September 3, 1861. He served as a general until February 28, 1863. At that time, he left the army to go back into politics.
Later Political Career
Dumont was elected to the United States Congress. He represented Indiana as a Unionist in the Thirty-eighth Congress. He was reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress. He served in Congress from March 4, 1863, to March 3, 1867.
While in Congress, he led important committees. He was chairman of the Committee on District of Columbia. He also chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Interior. He decided not to run for reelection in 1866.
Final Years
President Ulysses S. Grant chose Dumont to be the Governor of Idaho Territory. However, Dumont passed away in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 16, 1871. He died before he could officially start his new role. He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
